A great turn out of 30 riders on a typically windswept Belmont Criterium course on Thursday night. Eleven riders in A grade, 7 in B, 9 in C and 3 in D grade. Racing was over an undisclosed time until the referee signalled two laps to go. D grade raced for 20 minutes plus 2 (7 laps) and A grade 45 minutes plus 2 laps (14 laps). B and C grades finished between the two. Competitive racing with all groups, except B grade, in a sprint finish. Mike Jelenko was far too strong in B grade finishing half a lap ahead, of Dave Spence who was too quick for Jim Knott. Many attacks in A grade before all coming together for a great sprint finish with Simon Witcher pipping Paul Baretta on the line with Ray Russo third. C grade saw Paul Ryan outlast Vince Haveaux and Dave Phillips close up in third. D grade saw Sue Cox too strong at the finish for new rider Mick Barnes.
