A field of 30 riders took the start for 3 laps of the Paraprap course in ideal conditions for bike racing.

Brian long was the lone limit rider off 24 minutes with the rest of the field split between 6 more groups – 11 min, 8 min, 6 min, 4 min, 2 min and scratch.

The early movers were the scratch bunch (Brad Haskett, Ric Buckwell & Dave Warren) catching 2nd scratch on the first lap and also the 4 min bunch (Vic Mason, Jim Knott, Jeff Miller and Shane Korth) with Vic Mason driving a cracking pace straight from the gun up misery lane catching the 6 min bunch also on the first lap.

Lance Rogers and Gerald Mullaly from the 6 min bunch joined the 4 minute bunch in rolling track turns and keep chasing the field down whilst managing to keep scratch at bay.

Coming into the last lap the 4 min bunch had their eyes on the 8 min bunch who had taken the lead in the race but they still held a sizeable gap. The 4 minute bunch had about the same gap over scratch.

The 4 minute bunch finally caught the leading 8 min bunch coming in the “S Bend” onto Larcombes Rd with Vic Mason going straight to the front alongside James Stuart who both opened up the sprint a long way from home. Shane Korth sat on Vic’s wheel until he opened up with 100 metres to go with Lance Rogers sprinting in for second and Jim Knott 3rd. Paul Bird snuck over the line in 4th ahead of the day’s workhorse in Vic Mason 5th. Scratch came over the line a mere 10 seconds after the winners with Rick Buckwell fastest time of 57.09. A very well handicapped race.
