John Windsor Memorial

Geelong Veterans Cycling Club held its final race of the season The John Windsor Memorial Sunday 12th December.
John was a founding member of the club, served on the committee, helped where ever he could and was also a keen racer.

34 dry and keen riders started the 3 lap handicap over the small circuit at Parapararap.
Riding off the 26 minute Limit mark were Andrew Keenan and Sam Flaccavento. 8 minutes adrift were the 18 minute bunch of Ken Mansfield, Peter Dickson, Gordon McColl and Gary Opperman.
Chasing them off the 11 minute 30 second mark were Daryl Petersen, Rod Lambeth, John Watson & Len Bent. A further 3 minutes 30 seconds back were the 8 minute riders Chris Colley, Ross West, Tony Spark & Doug Wilson. The 6 minute bunch of Peter Umbers, Joe Gulino, David Phillips, Amanda Hosking & Greg Whitfield were chased by the 3 minute group of Bill McConnell, Kane Airey,Nathan Williams, Laurie Paltridge, David Kolevski & Danny Burke. The second scratch bunch of Jeff Miller, Nick Oakley, Frank McCarthy, David Serra and Neil Maurer were given a 1 minute buffer to the two powerful scratchmen Andrew Weightman & Peter McDonough. Drenching Rain and gusting wind greeted all of the riders on the 1st lap making it difficult to maintain a strong tempo.
The limit riders were soon caught by the 18 minute surviving riders and managed to hold off all the chasing bunches. The 11min 30s bunch could not hold it together for long and soon were separated making it easier for the chasing bunches to wind them in. The 8 min bunch managed to stay intact even when caught by the powerful 6 min bunch with more than 1 & ¾ of a lap remaining. Coming across the finish line to start the last lap the 3 leading riders Andrew Keenan 26m , Gary Opperman & Gordon McColl 18m had a 15 minute lead to the combined 6 & 8 minute bunches. The 3 min bunch combined well and managed to keep ahead of scratch and 2nd scratch until caught by the flying scratchman Andrew Weightman turning into the finishing straight who had jumped clear of his co marker and some of 2nd scratch.
Confusion reigned at the last marshal point with 3 bunches converging into one and scratchman Weightman powering ahead trying to reel in the 3 leading riders.
With several riders slowing or even stopping at the last marshal point which caused a disorganised chase down the last 2km. The 3 managed to hold on and take the first 3 places with Andrew Keenan(26m) 1st, Gordon McColl(18m) 2nd & Gary Opperman(18m) 3rd a further 4min 36s behind was the fast finishing Andrew Weightman(scr) 4th & (F/Time) well clear of David Serra (1m) 5th, Frank McCarthy (1m) 6th and Tom Gray (3m) 7th.

The Windsor family presented the trophies to the placegetters and a BBQ lunch was enjoyed by all.

This was our last road race for 2010, Criterium racing 6pm for 6:30pm start Thursday 16th opposite Barwon Activity Centre, 2011 Road racing season commences 23rd January.

The committee wishes all members and family a Merry Christmas & a Safe & successful 2011.

Geelong Veteran Cycling Club
Jack Griffin Handicap

Today was the 28th year that “JACK GRIFFIN”, a life member and highly respected member, has sponsored a trophy race at the club. Jack, at 86 years, has just completed a ride from Townsville to Darwin (2500kms in 28 days) following his ride last year from Brisbane to Cairns. He continues to be a great role model for club members. This event is always very well supported by the Club membership and today we had thirty five entries for the race over four laps of the Paraparap Circuit, 46 km. .
A slight south easterly breeze and plenty of cloud cover for the duration of the race made it a pleasant day for all. The limit riders saw they had been given a generous mark of 18.00 min and decided to give it their best shot until they lost two riders and blew their chance being swallowed up by the chasers including 16.00 min and 13.30 min bunches by the end of lap three. At this time, scratch and second scratch had combined and looked like reeling everyone in, however the 6.45 bunch had overhauled the 10.15 min in lap 3 and gathered all in front of them up the Forest Rd hill and were going to be a hard catch for the chasing group. The 4.45 bunch were caught on lap 4 by scratch and tried hard to hang in with the fast finishing riders in Steve Young and Peter McDonough.
Greeting the chequered flag a bunch of 14 riders were all vying for a place, and, in a very close finish, no one could match the strength of Marcus Coppock , a very close second went to Amanda Hosking with centimetres to 3rd place David Kolevski, and only 48 seconds back to scratch rider and fastest time powerhouse, Steve Young.

Final results:

1st M Coppock – 1:13:10 – 37.7 km/h
2nd A Hosking
3rd D Kolevski
4th D Tonkin
5th D Phillips

Twelve members braved the elements that mother nature set in place, wet and windy. Well, it was, the moment of truth to see if you could handle the conditions out Forest Road and return, strong head winds going out and showers before the turn around, riders thinking a tail wind was going to aid them on the return, however it wasn’t to be, the wind had changed to a westerly and only assisted in patches. Rider’ to do well were, 1st Andrew Weightman, 2nd Bill McConnell, 3rd Jeff Miller.

Final results:

Geelong Veteran Cycling Club

Twenty keen riders attempted the Geelong veteran Cycling Club 57km handicap over four laps at Parapararap on Sunday.
Lone limit rider Andrew Kennan set off with a mark of 30 minutes into a slight head wind up misery lane.
Six minutes adrift the 24 minute bunch of Gil Wright, Ian Sumner, Ken Mansfield, Terry Robinson, Grant Rogers & Brian Long with a readjusted mark chased hard and soon dropped Ken and Brian giving the remaining riders a challenge to catch them.
Ten minutes behind the fourteen minute bunch of Ross West, Dennis Sonnogan, Amanda Hosking & Irwin Saunders rode a subdued pace.
Four minutes behind the ten minute bunch of Marcus Coppck, David Phillips & Joe Gulino took off from the start and never relaxed the pace over the entire race.
Four minutes behind the six minute bunch of Rob Nicholls & Kane Airey had the hard tasks of chasing down three while being chased by three.
Four minutes behind the two minute bunch of Peter McDonough, Mal Lloyd & Nick Oakley set off determined to keep the lone scratchman out of their bunch.
One minute behind the Flying Scratchman Steve Young was jumping out of his skin to chase down and catch all in front of him.
Andrew rode a lone race till caught by Gil,Ian,Ken,Terry,Grant & Brian who soon had a smooth even tempo which propelled their bunch to victory.
Ross, Dennis, Amanda & Irwin needed more than four minutes from the train like express trio of Marcus, David & Joe who soon had caught them with more than two laps remaining.
Three of the four caught riders took turns when they could with the express trio burying themselves to try & catch the remaining riders.
Rob & Kane rode a sensible race biding their time till their chasers caught & upped the pace.
Peter, Mal & Nick had a one minute buffer at the start but that soon diminished due to Nick retiring with mechanical trouble early on.
The Flying scratchman Steve was focused on one thing “ Catching all in front of him “ and rode a blistering pace soon catching the two left from the 1m bunch.
The 24m remaining riders came home strong for a bunch sprint with Ian Sumner taking the win 1hr49m40s with Gil Wright second, Grant Rogers third & Terry Robinson fourth.
1m20s behind Marcus Coppock taking the sprint for fifth from Joe Gulino sixth Dave Phillips seventh Dennis Sonnogan eighth Ross west ninth.
Coming in tenth and for fastest time 1hr28m45s Steve Young a further 1m45s adrift.

In near perfect conditions for riding, with a slight easterly blowing and temperature in the high teens. 26 riders took to the Paraparap circuit to contest the 58km (5 lap) handicap race. Bill Mantova led off proceedings riding solo from his mark of 30 min with Steve Young riding solo off scratch.

Most groups had at least 3 riders in them allowing for good solid riding and as the 3 min group started off Bill Mantova was just completing his first lap. For the first 2 laps groups were able to maintain their start order but the gaps were closing down whilst Steve Young had ridden hard to catch the 1 min group so as to catch his breath and then push on for the riders ahead. Meanwhile the Mal Lloyd express came to a premature end with a puncture half way into the race. In the third lap the 11 min group driven by Nathan Williams combined with the 16 min group.

Steve Young was now driving the 1 min bunch hard and caught the 3 min group along Larcombes rd on the fourth lap which now gave this group the fire power to catch the field ahead. As the last lap commenced the 5 min group being driven by Colin Hooper caught the remnants of the 16 & 19 min group whilst Nathan Williams and Joe Gulino had skipped clear and now were leading the race. At the ‘chicane’ for the last time the bulk of the field came together with about 15 riders.

As the main field turned into Hendy Main for the last time the leading riders of Nathan & Joe had the race stitched up with minor placings up for grabs. Nathan Williams who is a bigger unit than Joe was able to out sprint Joe and win in a time of 1:38 with Joe second. Meanwhile the chasing group were eyeing each other off for the minors. With about 700m to the line Tony French took off and put in about a 50m gap with the field still waiting with fingers on triggers. With 400m to go Steve Young took off from the rear off the field with Colin Hooper and Rick Buckwell on his hammer. Both Steve and Rick were able to put in some space on the main group and cross the line in 3rd and 4th respectively with Steve taking out fastest time in 1:28.

Final results:

1st Nathan Williams (11 mins) 1:38
2nd Joe Gulino (11 mins)
3rd Rick Buckwell (3 mins)
4th Nick Oakley (3 mins)
5th Jeff Miller (1 min)

Geelong ‘Stan Howard’ Open

With Geelong all abuzz from the UCI cycling titles, over 130 riders signed on Saturday morning for the Geelong ‘Stan Howard’ Open held over 58km and 5 laps of the Paraparap circuit. Racing was always going to be keen with fantastic conditions, temperatures in the low 20’s and a light easterly blowing. The limit markers took off giving up 36mins to the scratch riders.

For the first two laps, bunches were able to hold their own but by the third, the front markers from the 36, 22 & 19 minute groups had combined, with mid and back markers also slowly coming together. By the fourth lap, riders were throwing everything into it as the scratch & 1:45 groups had combined and looked to devour the field ahead of them. As the 3:30 bunch turned into Larcombes Rd the rampaging scratchies swallowed them up.

By the time the scratch bunch had turned into Forest Rd for the final lap, approximately 70 riders were on the same stretch with less than 5kms to go. As riders battled down Grays Rd gaps were closing with every meter.

With less than 1600 meters to the line, all groups came together creating a mass bunch finish of over 50 riders and a headache for VVCC officials. Riders vying for line honours took over the whole road. Back markers could not squeeze through the large bunch and had to coast to the line settling for fastest time which was awarded to Steve Young in 1:19:55 just 10 seconds behind the winner.

Ultimately Ivan Howes (Hume) of the 7:15 bunch was able to thread his way through the mayhem to take out the race in a time of 1:27:10 with David Serra (Warrnambool) of the 5:15 bunch second and Kane Airey (Geelong) of the 11:00 bunch third.

Final results:

They swapped turns for the next 10kms until misery lane where Nathan could not hold Joe’s wheel and slipped out the back. 16 riders contested the Geelong Veterans cyclists Fathers Day sealed handicap in windy conditions.
A slight delay to the start time to allow the Club and State Handicappers to ready themselves after helping clear the course of downed tree limbs felled by the gale force winds during the night.
3 Laps with a strong wind blowing greeted the 16 riders who had a massed start in the Father’s day sealed handicap.
The race was controlled till the start of Forest road.
Steve Young attacked once on Forest road and rode away from the remaining riders, to complete the remaining 2 &3/4 laps by himself.
Neil Maurer, Rob Nicholls, Kane Airey, Colin Hooper , Stan Gregorio & Carl Leahy managed to form a smooth working bunch soon after Steve’s attack and also ride away from the remaining riders.
Ralph Wright & Joe Gulino left the remaining riders to try and catch the afore mentioned bunch of 6.
They only managed to catch the dropped rider Stan with the other dropped rider Carl Leahy blowing up and U turning back to the Club!.
Those three worked together for the next lap until the pace set by Joe was to much for Stan & he left Ralph and Joe to their steady solid pace.
Dave Phillips was the next rider to catch Stan and work with him til the finish line.
Ross West was the next rider to jump clear of the remaining riders and maintain his pace to keep clear of those behind him.

Peter Hosking Memorial Handicap
5 laps/58 km

The Peter Hosking Memorial was held in extremely windy conditions from the west but no rain eventuated making for tolerably riding. The combine race with Colac saw a total field of 23 riders which included 8 riders from Colac. Limit riders of Gil Wright and Bernadette Rowbottom started the race by more than 27 mins to scratch and had completed a lap as 2nd scratch riding off 4mins consisting of 6 riders set off up Hendy Main rd. For the first 2 laps most groups held together but the tough conditions saw Eddy Ziedaitis and Peter McDonough both being dropped by their respective groups. Peter feeling the intensity of the race even left his brekkie on the side of the road. By the 4th lap Bernadette who was now riding solo was caught by the 22 min group and Ross West lost both of his riders from his 18:30 group now riding back with the 15:30 group.

Going into the final lap the field had devolved into 3 groups being the leading bunch who commanded a 4min lead over the 4 min bunch who, were still riding as an intact group and the 3 scratch riders a further 2mins behind. Heading up Hendy Main for the last time the lead bunch of riders cracked riding into the wind and by the time they turned into Forest rd they were strung out going over the rises. The 4 min bunch could now sense blood as they mopped up the stragglers along Grays road but knew the scratchies were pressing hard and were closing down the gap fast. The 4 min bunch finally caught Dennis Sonongan who had bravely ridden solo down Grays with 400mts to the Grays/Hendy Main corner, but were now only 200mts ahead of scratch. With 2kms to the line scratch rider Tony McGann hit the front of a 12 man field and upped the ante and put in powerful surge for the next kilometre along with strong wind gusts from the side played havoc with riders which softened up the group, whilst the other scratch riders of Steve Young and David Lunn biding their time.

With 500mts to the line Tony pulled over and in the mean time had broken the field into 2 leaving just 5 riders to contest a final charge to the line. David Lunn and Steve Young then made their move and sprinted past rick buckwell, Carl Leahy and Ralph Islet and continued on to the line and took out first and second respectively while the minor placings went to Ralph, Rick and Carl.

Nobles Rd return, Forest Rd return & finish – 49km Handicap

18 riders took to the road in strong north westerly’s that was always going to test the mettle of all riders. All bunches stayed in tack for the Nobles rd return leg, it was on the outward leg of the Forest rd where the 9 & 18 and the 2:30 & 5 min bunches combined to make for some competitive riding.

With 10kms to go, scratch riders Steve Young and Peter McDonough finally caught the 2:30 group after some hard chasing into the wind. The tempo of the race went up a notch as this group pressed on in search of the lead riders. With 5kms to go not only did the pace hot up but some argy bargy between riders developed, which created some confusion and loss of focus of the chasing riders. As the riders charged up Hendy main rd Kane Airey had broken away from his group and was riding for his life in an effort to hold off a disjointed chasing bunch that had lost some initiative.

Steve who had pulled over into the gravel then came from the rear of the bunch hotly chased by Robbie Nichols who was not going to let him go without a fight, along with mal Lloyd. With 100mts to the line Kane was caught by Steve along with Rick Buckwell who had now tacked on as well. With the final charge to the line Steve held off Rick by 2 lengths with Kane hanging in for 3rd with Peter toughing it out for fastest time.

Final results:

1st Steve Young (Scratch)

Under these trying conditions it was always going to be a back markers day, after 3 laps the time keeper had half of the field with him to witness the judging of the finish. Blackgate Rd Return, Forest Rd Return + 1 lap – 59 kms

In sunny but bitterly cold conditions 14 riders tackled the 59km blackgate rd and return/forest rd and return + 1 lap, circuit. Gil Wright led off from limit commanding a 25 min start on scratch and rode solo for the entire race to claim victory.

Raced over 4 laps (46 kms) we had 29 riders, start in an extremely bad Westerly wind with rain during the race, making it a hard, cold day.
