A strong field took to the circuit yesterday at Paraparap for a three lap handicap event. Weather conditions were perfect with a light breeze from the north-west. The middle markers worked well but were hampered by strong out-markers making the most of their handicaps. The twelve minute group of John Bell, Terry Robinson and Tony Spark were not to be outdone and grouped together with the seventeen minute bunch of Brian Long, Brian Farrell, John Watson and Ken Mansfield to ensure that they contested the finish. Riders across the field that dominated the race were Jeremy Tatchell, Gordon Spargo, John Hilsdon and Phil Preston. While most riders contributed on the day the winners’ time suggested that the outmarkers made the best of their marks. Good to see Don Stewart back and riding strongly considering his layoff.

Results: 1. J Bell, 2. T Spark, 3. J Watson, 4. B Long, 5. J Tatchell, 6. J Hildson, 7. G Spargo, 8. P Preston.

Winner’s time: 1.15.02. Fastest time: D Pike – 1.05.

Next week’s race will be a handicap event on MELBOURNE CUP DAY 4 November starting at 10.00 am
